How the System Works
Two sensors mounted no more than six inches above the floor on each track send an infrared beam across the opening. If the beam breaks while the door is closing, the opener reverses. Federal safety rules have required this on residential openers since 1993.
One sensor is the sender and one is the receiver. Both have indicator lights, and their behavior tells you what is wrong before anyone touches a screwdriver.
The Usual Causes
Misalignment from a bump with a trash bin or a bicycle is the most common. Sun glare striking the receiver in the late afternoon is a distinctly Florida cause, and a small shield or repositioning solves it. Spider webs and lawn debris across the lens are next.
Wiring failures come from staples driven too tight during an earlier installation, or from corrosion at the terminal on the motor head. On older units the sensors themselves simply fail.
What Never To Do
Do not bypass, unplug or tape the sensors together to force the door to close. That removes the only automatic protection between a closing door and a child or pet in the opening.
If the door only closes when you hold the wall button down, the opener is telling you the safety circuit is faulty. That is a repair, not a workaround.
