A damaged garage door is often the largest single opening failure in a storm claim. Documentation decides how that claim goes.
Document Before You Touch Anything
Photograph the full door from the driveway, then each damaged section up close, then the track, brackets and any interior damage caused by water that came through the opening. Wide shots establish the address and the opening, close shots establish the damage.
Note the date and the named storm if there was one. If the door is unsafe to leave in place we will secure the opening and photograph the condition first, because removing evidence before the adjuster sees it complicates the claim.
What the Adjuster Will Ask For
Expect requests for the date of loss, photographs, a written repair or replacement estimate with line items, and often the product approval or age of the existing door. If the existing door had no product approval label, the carrier may treat part of the replacement as an upgrade rather than a covered repair.
We write estimates that separate like for like replacement from any code required upgrade, which makes the adjuster's job straightforward and reduces back and forth.
Repair Versus Replace on a Claim
A single dented section on a door that is still manufactured can sometimes be replaced on its own. On older doors the section is discontinued, colors no longer match, and a full replacement is the honest recommendation. We tell you which situation you are in before you file.
Keep in mind that a new impact rated door with a current product approval usually improves your wind mitigation rating, which can lower the premium going forward.
