An off track door is the call we get most often at night. Do not try to force it, and do not run the opener.
How Doors Come Off Track
The three usual causes are closing the door on an obstruction, a broken lift cable that lets one side drop, and a vehicle contact that bends the vertical track. In every case the rollers on one side leave the channel and the door hangs at an angle.
Once that happens the weight distribution is wrong and the springs are holding an unbalanced load. Running the opener at that point bends more track, tears hinges and can pull the top section apart.
What Not To Do
Do not pull the emergency release while the door is stuck partway open. If the cable on one side has failed, releasing the trolley can drop the door. Leave it where it is, keep vehicles and people out from under it, and call.
Do not attempt to lever the rollers back into the track with a pry bar. It works occasionally and bends the track permanently the rest of the time.
How We Put It Right
We secure the door with locking pliers on the track, relieve spring tension where needed, seat the rollers, then straighten or replace the affected track section. Bent track is replaced rather than hammered back, because a flattened radius will throw the door off again.
We then check hinges, the bottom bracket, cable condition and drum alignment, because an off track event almost always damages something upstream of the rollers.
