A door can survive a storm and still be compromised. These are the checks we run on Weston homes once the wind drops.
Look at the Track and Brackets First
Wind pressure pushes the door inward and pulls it outward in the same event. The first place that shows is the vertical track and the jamb brackets. Look for lag bolts that have backed out of the jamb, brackets that have rotated, or track that has bowed away from the wall.
Also check the top fixture and the horizontal track hangers at the ceiling. A door that ran fine before the storm and now shudders at the top of its travel usually has a shifted hanger.
Check the Panels and Struts
Sight down the face of each section from the side. A section that has taken wind load will show a gentle bow that was not there before. Look at the strut ends where they bolt to the section for elongated holes or missing fasteners.
Water intrusion behind the bottom seal is normal after a heavy event. Standing water inside the bottom retainer for days afterward is not, and it is worth pulling the seal to dry it out.
Test the Balance and the Opener
Disconnect the opener with the release cord and lift the door by hand to about waist height. It should hold roughly in place. If it slams down or shoots up, the spring balance changed and the door should not be operated with the opener until it is corrected.
Reconnect and test the photo eyes with an object in the path. Storm surge in the electrical system frequently knocks sensors out of alignment or damages the logic board.
Get a Documented Inspection
We provide photo documentation of any storm damage we find, which is what an insurance adjuster will want to see.
